The bail comes amid questions over the sentencing of 85 people without dope tests, the legal basis for their convictions and the credibility of the police seizure list.

Two women arrested during a police raid at the residence of Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdullah Al Zahir in Dhaka’s Bhatara have been granted bail by a Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. One woman was released on 27 October, while the other is expected to be released from Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail on 28 October. The bail comes amid significant legal scrutiny regarding the sentencing of 85 individuals who were arrested during the 20 October operation. Defence lawyers have challenged the convictions, noting that the accused were sentenced without undergoing dope tests and questioning the credibility of the police seizure list. While the raid was conducted as an anti-drug operation, the accused were sentenced for disturbing public order. The defence also argued that the quantity of drugs cited as evidence for 85 people was unrealistic. Executive Magistrate Asaduzzaman, who issued the sentences, stated that the accused were sentenced after confessing. The incident has drawn criticism from legal experts and 101 prominent citizens, who have called for an independent investigation into the legality of the process and the protection of citizens’ privacy. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has defended the operation, stating that personal freedom is subject to law, morality, and social values.
