Vegetables, eggs, fish, chicken, flour, and milk have become significantly more expensive in Dhaka’s wholesale and retail markets, with traders attributing the surge to increased transport costs following the recent fuel price hike. Traders report that higher vehicle fares have directly impacted the cost of goods, with some noting that transport expenses for a single truckload have risen by as much as Tk4,000.

Prices were already high before. Now they are rising more due to fuel prices. I had to pay Tk400 more in pickup fare today.

Vegetable prices have seen an increase of Tk10-30 per kilogram within a week, while farm eggs have crossed the Tk160 per dozen mark. Chicken supply has reportedly fallen as production costs remain high and transport becomes more expensive. Fish prices have also climbed by Tk5-10 per kilogram at the wholesale level. Additionally, packaged flour and maida prices have risen, and liquid milk prices have increased by up to Tk10 per litre over the past month and a half. A shortage of one- and two-litre bottled soybean oil has also emerged, with sellers noting that companies are releasing smaller quantities into the market.
