Additional IGP urges closer rape probes and faster case disposal.

Police headquarters has directed field-level officers to identify and take strict action against the alleged godfathers behind drug trafficking and juvenile gangs. Additional Inspector General of Police (Crime and Operations) Md Sayedur Rahman issued the directive during the September crime review meeting at Police Headquarters on 27 October.

Metropolitan police commissioners, range deputy inspectors general, and district superintendents of police attended the meeting virtually. During the session, the additional IGP reiterated the Bangladesh Police’s zero-tolerance policy regarding drugs and juvenile gangs.

Sayedur Rahman urged officers to enhance the police force’s image through professionalism, honesty, and dedication, while emphasizing the need for humane treatment of the public. He further instructed officers to ensure that robbery cases are accurately recorded and investigated promptly to facilitate the prosecution of offenders.

Regarding sexual violence, the additional IGP called for closer supervision of rape investigations to improve conviction rates and stressed the necessity of increasing the overall rate of case disposal. He also advocated for inclusive community and beat policing by involving reputable members of society.

The meeting included a review of the national crime situation for September, covering incidents such as robbery, dacoity, murder, rape, attacks on police, and abductions, alongside an assessment of pending arrest warrants and trial outcomes.
