In Bangladesh, the Parents’ Maintenance Act, 2013, establishes a legal obligation for children to provide for their parents. Maintenance under this Act extends beyond financial support to include food, clothing, medical care, accommodation, and companionship. If a parent has multiple children, this responsibility is shared among them. The law also mandates that children must maintain regular contact with their parents and prohibits forcing parents to reside in old-age homes against their will. Violations of these provisions can result in a fine of up to one lac taka or, in default, imprisonment for up to three months. The Act also extends to grandparents in the absence of the parents. However, a critical practical limitation exists: legal proceedings under this Act can only be initiated through a written complaint filed by the affected parent. Consequently, third parties, including neighbours or well-wishers, cannot file a case on behalf of neglected parents, even if they witness the abandonment.
