The Chattogram Port Protection Committee has formally rejected remarks made by Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, who recently characterized the management of Chattogram Port as stagnant. In a statement issued on 25 September, committee leaders Engineer Delwar Majumdar and Fazlul Kabir Mintu described the minister’s assessment as unrealistic and misleading. The committee asserted that local workers, employees, and engineers have consistently maintained port operations and improved cargo-handling capacity, even under difficult conditions. While the committee acknowledged the necessity of modernization and technological advancement, it expressed strong opposition to the long-term leasing of profitable, strategically significant container terminals to foreign companies. The committee called for an independent, transparent assessment of the port’s performance and announced a sit-in protest scheduled for 5 October in front of the Chattogram Port Bhaban to voice their concerns regarding national interests and state control.
