State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has advocated for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into mediation processes, emphasizing the necessity of safeguards to maintain impartiality, transparency, and confidentiality. Speaking at the 16th Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Group of Friends of Mediation in New York on 24 September, she highlighted the importance of proactive mediation to resolve grievances before they escalate into violence. Shama also underscored the need for increased investment in peacebuilding capacity, citing the Integrated Peacebuilding Competency Programme at the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) as a model. Furthermore, she urged the United Nations to enhance its preventive action capabilities through predictable funding, rapid-response mediation support, and early-warning systems, while stressing the importance of respecting national ownership in peacebuilding efforts.
