The BNP government is reviewing corruption allegations against former president Mohammed Shahabuddin on a priority basis to fulfil the aspirations of the people, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Md Asaduzzaman said on Sunday.

He, however, stressed that while addressing public expectations, the government must also ensure that no innocent person is punished.

Speaking to reporters after an event in Chattogram, Asaduzzaman said people should maintain confidence in the head of government and other cabinet members throughout the process.

The event marked the inauguration of a five-day introductory workshop for newly enrolled members of the Chittagong District Bar Association.

The corruption allegations relate to Shahabuddin’s tenure as a commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and as a director of Islami Bank.

If an investigation finds the allegations to be true, legal action will be taken, the minister said, adding that the government is examining the matter and will announce its decision at the appropriate time.

Responding to a question about a possible travel ban on Shahabuddin—who is also a member of the now-banned Awami League—that could prevent him from travelling abroad for advanced medical treatment, Asaduzzaman referred the matter to the Home Ministry.

“These are confidential issues and will be disclosed only at the appropriate time, keeping national interests in mind,” the law minister said.
