Eight second-year Physics students were temporarily suspended pending investigation into allegations of overnight physical and verbal abuse

Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have temporarily suspended eight students over allegations of ragging several freshers, according to an official order issued on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspension order, signed by Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman, said the students were suspended under Section 4(1)(b) of the Jahangirnagar University Students’ Discipline Ordinance, 2018.

The suspended students are Md Fazle Hasan Fahad, Al-Amin Hossain, Zahid Hasan, Faisal Ahmed, Mahmudul Hasan Khan Akib, Mahmudul Amin Siam, Mostafizur Rahman, and Syed Sakib Ahmed Ratul. All are second-year students of the Department of Physics.

According to the office order, the incident took place between 10pm on Monday and 3am on Tuesday, when several students from the department’s 54th batch (academic session 2024–25) allegedly subjected freshers from the 55th batch (academic session 2025–26) to ragging near the western side of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq Hall, an area locally known as Monpura.

The accused allegedly abused them with offensive language, physically harassed them, and forced them to perform repeated sit-ups while holding their ears.

The order stated that the students violated Section 5(e) of the Discipline Ordinance, 2018, which prohibits teasing, ragging, and other forms of abusive conduct in university halls, academic departments, or anywhere on the campus.

The university administration said the temporary suspension was imposed pending further action in connection with the allegations.
