The party said it would take organizational action after verifying the facts

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday said it will investigate allegations involving Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and take action in accordance with the party’s organizational rules after gathering facts and relevant information.

The announcement came a day after videos allegedly involving the MP circulated widely on social media, triggering public discussion and prompting the party to formally respond.

In a statement, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General and Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Department Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair said the party had been monitoring reports published in various media outlets and on social media regarding the matter.

He said statements from Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first and second wives, and the father of his second wife had already appeared in the media and would be taken into consideration during the party’s assessment.

“The actual incident will be examined by collecting information and data, and necessary steps will be taken in accordance with the organization’s rules,” the statement said.

The controversy erupted after videos allegedly showing the Satkhira-4 MP in a private setting began circulating online from Monday night.

The authenticity and circumstances surrounding the videos could not be independently verified.

District Jamaat Secretary Azizur Rahman told reporters that they believed the footage had originated from CCTV cameras installed at a residence in Dhaka.

However, that claim also could not be independently verified.

Meanwhile, Gazi Nazrul Islam issued a detailed statement on Facebook, rejecting suggestions that the videos depicted an extramarital relationship and describing the incident as part of a conspiracy linked to a family dispute.

According to the MP, he visited a business office in Moghbazar in Dhaka on July 13 with both his first wife, Maksuda Begum, and his second wife, Mariam Begum.

He said the office belonged to his second wife’s father, Md Masum Billah, and that the family remained there for about one and a half hours.

He alleged that while they were at the office, his driver and the maternal uncle of his second wife left briefly before returning with five to seven unidentified people, who held them hostage and extorted Tk1 lakh.

The MP further claimed that the vehicle he regularly used was later seized and that additional money was demanded in stages.

He alleged that the incident stemmed from a long-running dispute involving his second wife’s family.

According to his statement, videos of private moments between him and his second wife were secretly recorded and later circulated on social media with the intention of damaging his reputation.

He maintained that the videos had been falsely portrayed as evidence of an extramarital affair and described the campaign against him as “false, baseless and motivated.”

Gazi Nazrul Islam also said he married Mariam Begum on June 17 at her father’s residence in a family ceremony with the consent of his first wife.

Calling the circulation of the videos an invasion of privacy and an attempt to defame him, the MP urged the relevant authorities to identify those responsible and take legal action.

Jamaat has not indicated when its internal inquiry will be completed or whether any interim action will be taken against the MP while the matter is under review.
