New Delhi says there has been no change in its approach

India today said there has been no change in its position regarding the possible extradition of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, describing the matter as a “legal issue” which would be dealt with accordingly.

Responding to a question at the weekly media briefing of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked about Hasina’s recent remarks expressing her desire to return to Bangladesh in December and whether New Delhi was in contact with Dhaka to facilitate her return.

“There is no change in our approach to the matter,” Jaiswal said.

“Any extradition matter is a legal issue, as you very well know, and it will be dealt with accordingly,” he added.

Bangladesh government has sought Hasina’s extradition from India to face legal proceedings in connection with multiple cases filed after the fall of her government on August 5, 2024. India has so far not publicly indicated whether it would comply with the request.

During the same briefing, Jaiswal was also asked about reports suggesting that around 11 India-backed development projects in Bangladesh could be shelved because work had not yet begun.

In response, Jaiswal said, “On your question regarding development projects in Bangladesh, the development cooperation programme that we have with Bangladesh is something that is done in mutual consultations, and that continues to be the case.”
