India is examining Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday.

Speaking at the ministry’s weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Jaiswal said the requestisbeing reviewed in accordance with the applicable legal and judicial processes.

Responding to a question on whether there had been any communication between Bangladesh and India regarding the extradition request and Sheikh Hasina’s reported intention to return to Bangladesh in December, Jaiswal said, “We have received an extradition request. As we said earlier, the request is under examination. It will be considered in accordance with the relevant legal and judicial processes.”

Jaiswal was also asked about a separate extradition request by Bangladesh for a suspect in Indian police custody accused of killing a Bangladeshi politician before the country’s parliamentary election.

In response, Jaiswal said he had no information on that specific case.

He added that any extradition request is considered on the basis of the relevant legal framework and judicial procedures.
