Tarique Rahman says political differences will not stand in the way of a united effort to prevent militancy from taking root
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today said the government would not tolerate extremism or militancy and expressed confidence that the opposition would fully cooperate in combating both.
Delivering his concluding remarks during the second budget session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, Tarique said the martyrs had envisioned a Bangladesh founded on justice and equality, where neither the rich nor the poor would face discrimination.
“We firmly believe in that Bangladesh — one where extremism or militancy will never be allowed to take root,” he said.
“I have said before, the government will never tolerate extremism or militancy. While we may have differences with the opposition on some issues, we are united in our resolve that extremism will not be allowed to flourish, and I believe we will have the opposition’s full cooperation in this matter,” he added.
The second session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, which also served as the budget session for the 2026-27 fiscal year, began on June 7. On June 30, parliament passed a Tk 938,000 crore national budget for FY27, setting targets of 6.5 percent economic growth and reducing inflation to 7.5 percent.
Tarique, in his concluding remarks, said the budget was “pro-people”, hoping that the benefits would reach the grassroots.
Even though there may have been differences of opinion over the presentation of bills, he said both sides of the House have engaged in lively debate.
The government’s goal is to ensure a state where people are at the centre, he said. The PM also announced plans to introduce a “universal card” that will consolidate financial benefits currently provided through farmer cards, family cards, expatriate cards, and the honorarium cards for imams and muezzins into a single system.
He said to prevent authoritarianism in the future, the state and the people must be politically and economically strong. “We want to transform a debt-dependent economy into an investment-driven economy.”
He said the Leader of the Opposition has rightly pointed out that combatting corruption and maintaining law and order must be prioritised. The government is determined to control corruption by any means necessary.
The government is committed to developing law enforcement agencies into professional bodies to ensure the safety of citizens, the PM said.
He also assured that his government was committed to implementing every clause of the July Charter which they had signed.
He said that during the authoritarian rule, institutions were systematically destroyed, including the education and health sectors.
“If you want to destroy a nation, you destroy its education system and the fascist rulers seemed to have embraced this principle, for the sake of a certain nation,” he said.
Similarly, the health sector was devastated, with an intention to serve the purpose of a certain nation, he added.
The government has plans to improve the quality of education and health services, with allocations for both sectors to be raised to five percent of the GDP.
“We must ensure that fascism and authoritarianism never again rise in Bangladesh, and that our beloved country never becomes subservient to any country. On this question, I firmly believe there exists a national unity between the government and opposition, and that this unity will remain intact,” Tarique said.
