The driver alleged he was attacked after he protested against the MP’s alleged extramarital affair and over suspicion that he leaked the videos that went viral.

A former driver of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam has filed an attempted murder case against the lawmaker and four others at Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka.

Police have arrested one accused in connection with the case. The arrestee is Aminur Rahman.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Detective Branch's (Mirpur Division) Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rakib Khan said, "Obaidur Rahman filed the case with Pallabi police last night. Based on the case, one person has been arrested and sent to court."

According to Pallabi Police Station sources, Obaidur, a former personal driver of MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, filed the case last night, accusing the lawmaker and four others of beating him and attempting to kill him by strangulation over his protest against an alleged relationship and suspicion that he leaked videos.

According to the case statement, Obaidur lived at his sister's residence at Rose Garden Tower in Pallabi's Kalshi area and worked as the personal driver of Gazi Nazrul Islam.

The complaint alleged that Nazrul used to visit the residence due to family ties and later developed an alleged relationship with Obaidur's niece. After learning about the matter, Obaidur informed his family and requested the MP to end the relationship.

It alleged that Nazrul became angry and threatened Obaidur with death.

The complaint further stated that a group in Moghbazar recently obtained some "objectionable videos" involving Nazrul and his niece and allegedly began blackmailing the MP.

Obaidur alleged that Nazrul suspected him of secretly recording the videos and providing them to the media and the group involved in the alleged blackmail.

Following the dispute, the complaint said, the other accused attacked Obaidur on Nazrul's instructions on 14 July.

It alleged that Aminur Rahman called Obaidur to a drawing room around 11am that day, where the other accused allegedly beat him with sticks.

At one point, Aminur allegedly pushed him to the floor and attempted to strangle him. The complaint said Obaidur's mother Tahmina and younger sister Mim rushed in after hearing his screams, forcing the attackers to flee.

Obaidur was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital for treatment, according to the case statement.
